“Unto the woman he said, I will greatly increase thy discomfort and thy size; in sorrow thou shalt bring forth children; and thy desire shall be to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee.”
    Genesis 3:16

    Introduction

Tradwifeism is a conservative ideology which believes that women are best suited to stick to traditional female roles in life and in marriage. It believes that women should be submissive to their husbands, and fulfill the traditional roles of women, such as homemaking, cooking, cleaning, child-bearing, and mothering. It also believes that women should conform to traditional female behavioral expectations, such as being polite, friendly, cheery, non-confrontational, and submissive. More extreme holders of these views go as far as to say that women should only wear dresses and even potentially veils as said in 1 Corinthians 11:2-10 in the Christian Bible. Tradwifeism is often religiously rooted, especially in Christianity in the west, but not exclusively so.

Tradwifeism generally idealizes 1950s suburban USA, greatly appreciating its aesthetics and seeing it as a bastion of Traditionalism.

    History

The "tradwife movement"'s roots can be traced back all the way to the Enlightenment period in Europe, with a lot of the original movement's core beliefs being rooted in Reactionaryism. It shares a lot of history with the development of Reactionary Feminism, including the shared affinity towards traditional Patriarchy that the both of them had. Many members of the movement would later resonate with the Cult of True Womanhood (or the Culture of Domesticity), a movement that originated around the time of the Industrial Revolution, in contrast to Liberal Feminism, which was also sprouting at around the same time.

In the 1940s and '50s in the west (particularly in the United States), televised advertising frequently promoted aspects of a certain suburban traditional housewife lifestyle of the time, creating a concrete aesthetic which the idea of the "ideal traditional wife" in the west would be based on for many years to come.

"Tradwife" as a modern cultural term and phenomenon started in 2018, but it earnestly began in 2022 with influencer Estee Williams posting content on TikTok with the hashtag #Tradwife. The movement exploded in popularity, receiving both massive praise and massive pushback. Many women accepted the movement due to the stress of modern living, while many others accused the movement of belonging to the alt-right, with undertones of white supremacy and misogyny.

Most people in this new movement would be a part of Gen Z, and they mostly attribute their attraction to the tradwife movement to the stress of living and working in traditionally male spaces. This has led many women into supporting traditional gender roles, which according to them, are much easier and more fulfilling to live by. This led to the development of a milder parallel movement (although close enough to still be called a part of the tradwife movement), Soft Girl-ism, which began on TikTok in 2023.

    Variants

    Biblical Tradwifeism

Biblical Tradwives, as their name would suggest, believe in following the roles and virtues for women as spoken of in the Bible (and in the case of Mormons, also those mentioned in the Book of Mormon, Doctrines & Covenants, and the Pearl of Great Price). This involves the perpetual submission to the husband, moral and spiritual purity, loyalty, and obedience. Depending on the denomination of Christianity and associated translation of the Bible, this could include even more and specific roles for women.

    Secular Tradwifeism

Secular Tradwives are those that are not religious but still believe that roles traditionally given to women, such as homemaking, cooking, cleaning, and submission are still best for women. Similarly to Petersonism, they would likely still advocate for a system much like if not exactly like a Christian one, even if they themselves are not Christian, due to the strong morals and good values associated with it.

    Soft Girl-ism

This is a much milder version of Tradwifeism that believes in male chivalry and female domesticity. While this could have roots in either a religious or secular philosophy, that is generally not a major point of the ideology. Mostly, Soft Girls believe that the materialistic nature of modern society is too difficult for them to handle and that men should pick up their slack. Instead of just selfishly receiving, however, Soft Girls would trade provision for domestic roles, creating a system much like that also desired by Tradwifeism.
