Reaganism is the ideology, policies, and principals of the 40th president of the United States, Ronald Reagan. It is defined by its economics known as "Reaganomics" (comparable to Neoliberalism), hard-right conservative social policy, and fierce opposition to communism and the Soviet Union.
It is often mistaken for Paleoconservatism, however, Ronald Reagan was not a paleoconservative.
History
Ronald Reagan won the presidency in 1980.
During his first term, Reagan wanted policies that reflected his personal beliefs such as individual freedom, he also brought economic changes, expanded the military, and contributed to the end of the Cold War.
During the Cold War Reagan escalated the tension between the soviet union and the U.S by reverting the policy of détente. He also ordered a massive improvement of the United States Armed Forces and implemented new policies that were directed toward the Soviet Union; he revived the B-1 Lancer program that had been canceled by the Carter administration, and he produced the MX Missile. In response to the Soviet deployment of the SS-20, Reagan oversaw NATO's deployment of the Pershing missile in West Germany.
During The Crack Epidemic, Reagan began what he called The "War On Drugs" in which Reagan began campaigns & made aggressive policies that Reagan thought would reduce the trade of illegal drugs. He said that "drugs were menacing our society" and promised to fight for drug-free schools and workplaces, expanded drug treatment, stronger law enforcement and drug interdiction efforts, and greater public awareness.
Beliefs
Reagan believes in individual freedom, Reaganomics, the War On Drugs, & anti-communism.
Criticism
It is believed that all modern political problems can be traced back to Ronald Reagan. Most people who oppose Reagan blame his administration for the rise in homelessness in the United States, the lack of social security for the poor and elderly in the US, and generally bad healthcare provisions due to privatization and lack of regulation. One of the ideas is that Ronald Reagan's administration was a strong reason for the growing wealth inequality and poverty in the United States. This can be traced back to Reagan's deregulation efforts and attempts to dismantle welfare. In addition to that, many critics of Reagan look back at his presidential campaign and administration, and his attempts at cutting social security, welfare, and other systems for the old and poor. The view of the war on drugs can be traced back to the 1966 Comprehensive Drug Abuse Prevention and Control Act, introduced by US Senator Strom Thurmond. The act established an independent agency for enforcement, the National Narcotics Commission, and created the Controlled Substances Act. People tend to point to these laws as the reason why there is an over-criminalization and harsh sentences for drug use in the United States - especially against the black community and the minority communities. This is what people believe causes a rise in gang violence and gang activity. Abortion is a hot topic in Anti-Reaganist circles, because of his administration’s efforts to block federal funding for Planned Parenthood organizations and restrict abortion services throughout the US. This, coupled with the rise of the Christian Right under Reagan, is viewed by many of his opposition as a blatant attack on the rights of the common American.
