    History

In 1956, Sukarno publicly criticized parliamentary democracy, claiming that it was "based on inherent conflict" as opposed to the notion of Indonesian harmony as the natural state of human relations. Instead, he sought a system based on the traditional village system by promoting discussion and consensus, under the guidance of village elders. He proposed a mixture of three elements, namely; nationalism, religion and communism became a cooperative government which was abbreviated as 'Nas-A-Kom'. This was intended to fulfill the demands of the three main factions in Indonesian politics at that time, namely - the army, religious groups and the communists. With support from the military, in February 1956, he declared 'Guided Democracy', and proposed a cabinet that would represent all the major political parties.

Soekarno's idea of Nasakom was put forward before Indonesia's independence. In 1927, he wrote a series of articles entitled "Nationalism, Islam and Marxism" in Indonesia Moeda, a publication published by the "General Study Club", a club founded by Soekarno and his associates in Bandung. In the article, Soekarno insisted on the importance of a national unity of nationalists, Islamists, Marxists in the uncompromising (non-cooperative) resistance against the Dutch, which later become Nationalism, Religion and Communism (Nasakom)
