Lulism or Petism is a Brazilian leftist ideology that encompasses the ideological stances of the Partido dos Trabalhadores (Worker's Party) but more especifically the ideology of ex-president Lula, it is Populist, Social Democratic, Progressive (despite being personally Reactionary) and although not socialist by itself, fairly aligned with socialist parties and very radical for a Socdem.

The term “Lulism” was coined by André Singer and refers to the left-wing political phenomenon that occurred in Brazil around President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. Created during the 2002 presidential campaign, Lulism represented a new plan in relation to the left-wing ideals adopted by the Workers' Party until the end of 2001, seeking transformations without confronting capital.

Several politicians in Latin America cited Lulism as a political model, when called the “Brasília Consensus” (as opposed to the Washington Consensus) and the “Brazilian Model”. This is the case of Ollanta Humala, José Mujica, Mauricio Funes, Fernando Lugo and oppositionist Henrique Capriles. Or, they combine this model with Chavismo, as is the case in Kirchnerist Argentina and Paraguay until the dismissal of Fernando Lugo.

Therefore, Lulism is a political ideology that has influenced not only Brazilian politics, but also politics throughout Latin America.

    History

Lula started out as an union man and became engaged with politics due to the military dictatorship, later running for president in most elections till he finally got elected in 2002, The first term was fairly radical, with many social programs and reforms aiming to combat inequality and a very independent and neutral foreign policy, his second term would ended up, less radical with Lula having to make concessions and aliances with more center parties, after that Dilma would get elected as his sucessor and would continue the Lulist party line, but she would end up impeached and Lula would get jailed for corruption, Lula would end up acquitted however, and free he would run for and win the 2022 campaign on a populist but not very radical campaign.
