- ↑ Often confused with a Monarcho-Fascist regime, but that is hardly the case. For example, Britannia possesses advanced forms of communication including modern cell phones, earpieces, the internet and television, and information seems to flow freely, despite rigid censorship and state propaganda in news broadcasts. Among the Britannians themselves, there does not appear to be a great amount of discontent with the current governmental system. This indicates that the Britannian government is not as repressive of the lower class Britannian citizens, in comparison to the repression of the Numbers. However, power struggles and feuding amongst the royalty and nobility seems to be commonplace. Also, there is no indication that fascism exists in Code Geass.
- ↑ via Honorary Britannian status
- ↑ Socially and culturally, albeit with a pro-feminist stance, as evidence with the amount of women in military and political positions
- ↑ At some point, the Holy Britannian Empire allowed women into the military and political office, indicating that equality between men and women was officially adopted.
- ↑ This is especially true for Honorary Britannians, who are are Numbers who vow their loyalty to the Holy Britannian Empire. All non-Britannians living in Britannia-conquered Areas are allowed to accept honorary Britannian citizenship as long as they are willing to serve and be loyal to the Empire. Honorary Britannians are legally almost identical to ethnic Britannians: they are allowed to earn special privileges, live in wealthy cities, etc. Socially, however, they are frequently discriminated against on the basis of their racial background.
- ↑ While religion isn’t of much importance to Britannia, despite being called “holy,” it can be assumed that Britannia is a predominately Protestant nation. At Odysseus and Tianzi's wedding, a priest in a Protestant cardinal's robes appears to be conducting the service (of note is the popularity of Western-style weddings in Japan).
- ↑ Some fans of Code Geass tend to confuse the Holy Britannian Empire with fascist ideology, though there is hardly any evidence to even suggest that fascism would even exist in this world like it does in the real world.
- ↑ The Holy Britannian Empire isn’t reactionary in the sense that it wants to revert back to a previous status quo or rejects modernism. Rather, it maintains a staunch adherence to aristocracy while also promoting progress in the scientific and technological sense, as proclaimed by Charles zi Britannia himself during his speech about inequality. https://youtu.be/IV0g8hcgqMI?si=5Crz3T55ysQiG9T9
- ↑ In the world of Code Geass, the Holy Britannian Empire prides itself in being a bastion of technological and scientific progress.
- ↑ Interestingly, he also seems to oppose the racist policies of his father, and was visibly appalled when Euphemia (under Lelouch's Geass) began slaughtering the Japanese.
- ↑ He literally nuked Pendragon in an attempt to try and get rid of Lelouch.
- ↑ The Purists are the closest thing to an actual organization resembling Fascism. They are a political and military faction within the Holy Britannian Empire that opposes the system of honorary citizenship, claiming that neither Britannian society nor its military should be sullied by foreigners. They would also use underhanded means in order to support their system. However, it's unlikely that they were of any interest to either Charles zi Britannia or the majority of the Britannian government, especially since the former is in favor of promoting the "Honorary Britannian" status for foreigners who prove themselves useful or loyal to the cause.
- ↑ The Principality is stated to be a republic, though the Royal Family shares power with a democratic body. The remaining members of the royal family seem to still have considerable influence, with Princess Nunnally able to push the legislature for certain policies despite having no direct power in any official capacity in the nation. Therefore, it is inaccurate to suggest that it is a republic. Rather, it is more accurately a parliamentary democracy with a constitutional monarchy.
- ↑ Despite being a right-winged reactionary movement emerging from the rotting corpse that was once the Holy Britannian Empire, it adopts the same pro-woman stance as its predecessor.
- ↑ Rather than being an actual empire, despite its name, the Neo-Britannian Empire is more of a terrorist group akin to real-life extremist groups like Al Qaeda, the Atom Waffen Division, the Irish National Liberation Army, Lehi, and numerous others.
- ↑ The Kyōto House was secretly funding the JLF before the arrival of Zero (Lelouch) and the Black Knights.
- ↑ Much like the Purist faction in Britannia’s political sphere, the JLF are the closest thing to being an organization that is genuinely fascist.
- ↑ Lelouch held romantic feelings for Euphemia, who was his half sister.
- ↑ Formerly part of JLF
