Ivan Illich was an austrian philosopher and priest who criticised the modern society. He believes that specialisation of work in capitalism lead to people losing power on their lives.

    Counter-productivity

When things are institutionalized, there are two thresholds, the first after which things are made more efficient, and the second after which things are counter-productive, here are some examples:

    Cars

At first, people started to use cars and they were able to save time, but after the second threshold, the "all-car" (car monopoly in transport) produced an increase in distance and if we calculate the "generalized speed" (including the time you spend working to have money to buy and repair your car), it's faster to use bicycles.

    The school

At first, people could go to school and learn interesting things, but after the second threshold, people were only sorted into schools and learned how to be a good worker in capitalist society. They can no longer thrive at school.
