Dark Lordism is a system in which society is ruled by a brutal autocrat who typically administers the state with the explicit intention of inflicting harm upon some group that is subject to the Dark Lord's power, be it an external group to be conquered or a population within one's own domain. It is most defined by its cruelty, malice, and will to dominate all life. Dark Lordism has some things in common with certain other ideologies, but Dark Lordism knows how to have fun, and is ironically somehow less edgy (despite being covered in sharp edges and spikes).

Dark Lordism essentially represents the complete subjugation of reality to the will of a single individual, usually in the form of a warlord-esque figure with a penchant for extreme violence. The Dark Lord may be aware that he is in fact evil, or perhaps may convince himself that whatever he's doing is necessary in some way (despite looking and acting like a fantasy villain).

Dark Lordism has its roots as a representation of a particular interpretation of Nietzschean philosophy, particularly of moral nihilism and the will to power. However, it can also be applied to more traditionalist systems and individuals, or other systems that otherwise claim to prioritize the greater good over the welfare of the individual, in opposition to Nietzcheanism; this has become increasingly common in the 21st century. Most often, however, it reflects a desire to reject traditional systems of morality and meaning, instead choosing to supplant them with the singular vision of the dark lord figure, who in some ways can be seen as a morbid reflection of the Nietzchean übermensch.

Dark Lordism is very often the result of disillusionment and corruption of ideals that were previously within the bounds of conventional morality, but have since strayed for one reason or another (usually anger, hatred, and/or general angst). While some manifestations of this ideology still cling to some idealistic cause, others embrace what they have become. This creates the most important distinguishing feature of pure Dark Lordism- it does not attempt to justify itself. It recognizes that it is irrational, but has little to no interest in rationality.
